Houston—Dementia and age-related macular degeneration (AMD) could have a similar pathogenesis because of an association between AMD and reduced cognitive function in older people, according to a study. A low score on a test of cognitive function increased the risk of AMD by almost 40%, the researchers found. Controls were put in place for other factors associated with AMD, and the authors found that a low-test score doubled the likelihood of the condition. Both conditions are associated with similar histopathologic changes. Clinical studies also have suggested the conditions share common vascular risk factors, such as hypertension and smoking. In addition, both conditions have been linked to an increased risk of stroke, according to the study.
